Tooth gems are one of the beauty industry’s newest crazes and are catching on like wildfire. People of all ages are adding these shiny gems to their smile. If you’re thinking of adding some sparkle to your smile, keep reading to decide this is right for you!
Firstly, What is a Tooth Gem?
Tooth gems are gems (usually Swarovski crystals) that are bonded to the enamel surface of your teeth and cured with a UV light. There are many shapes, sizes, and patterns available so you can customize your sparkles to fit your personality. Tooth gems are applied using orthodontic bonding products and go on just like an orthodontic bracket on the front of the tooth. Many people in the beauty industry are becoming certified to do this service, and we recommend seeing someone with proper training that is also bloodborne pathogen certified and using the correct, professional grade products.
Things to Consider Before Investing in a Tooth Gem
Tooth gems are for (almost) everyone. If you wear a retainer or night guard that comes into contact with the front surfaces of your teeth, they will not fit after tooth gems are applied. If you are lucky enough to have a permanent retainer that is applied on the lingual surface (behind) your teeth, this is for you! Some upper night guards (mainly for grinding/ bruxing) only come up halfway to the gumline, allowing space for a tooth gem if it is placed higher and is small enough. If this applies to you, be sure to bring your retainer in with you so your tooth gem technician can keep in mind where it ends and place the gem correctly. Please do not sacrifice wearing your retainer for the sake of wearing a tooth gem! Orthodontic treatment is expensive and if you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth will shift.
How Long Will My Tooth Gem Last?
Your tooth gem can last up to a year if you are caring for it (and your teeth) properly. Avoiding acidic drinks, such as tea, carbonated sodas, and coffee, will make your tooth gem last longer. Brushing twice daily and rinsing your mouth out after eating will also help, as you want to keep the area free from debris and food. Avoiding very crunchy or sticky foods near your tooth gem is also helpful.
How do I Remove My Tooth Gem?
If your tooth gem pops off, you will notice there will be a rough spot of composite on the surface of your tooth. This will have to be removed by a dentist with a small attachment made for removing and smoothing composite, which is the tooth colored bonding agent used to attach tooth gems to the enamel. Once that is smoothed off, as long as it was correctly applied and kept clean, there won’t be any residual indication that it was ever there. Please do not try and remove your tooth gem at home!
Things to Keep In Mind Before Getting a Tooth Gem
As we mentioned before, if you have a clear plastic or wire retainer that comes into contact with the front surfaces of your teeth, it will not fit after the tooth gem is applied. If you drink a lot of acidic or sugary drinks, your tooth gem may not last as long as you like. Please note the kjind of crystals that your technician is working with. It is important that they are Swarovski crystals with the proper backing for this procedure. Craft crystals have a foil backing that will leave a silver foil on the tooth after the gem comes off. This can be removed, but will be more noticeable than just the tooth colored composite that will be left behind after having the correct gem applied. At first, having your tooth gem will feel foreign, but your mouth will adjust to having it quickly. If you have your teeth professionally whitened while wearing your tooth gem, there will be a slightly darker spot left behind once the gem and composite paste are removed where the whitening did not reach. Because of this, it’s best to whiten before your tooth gem is applied.
