Your lash appointment can be the most relaxing form of self care, if you prepare correctly! Your lash artist wants you to know that this is your time- whether you need a silent appointment or time to be heard because you’re feeling overwhelmed. We are here to support you, lift you up, and there is also the wonderful bonus of helping make you even more beautiful than when you first came in! To be able to fully prepare for your lash appointment to make it as comfy as enjoyable as possible, follow these few tips to get the most out of your time with your artist.
Avoid Caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant and let’s be honest- most of us live off of the stuff. However, because of the uplifting effects, caffeine and other stimulants can cause major fluttering in the eyelids, making it harder for your lash artist to do their job. Imagine shooting a moving target, but on a microscopic level. Bouncing eyes are not the only side effect of consuming caffeine. It can also heighten other symptoms like claustrophobia or anxiety if those are things that you deal with regularly. It’s best to avoid caffeine all together 4-6 hours prior to your appointment especially if you are sensitive to it. You’ll thank me later when you get to sneak a nap in during your lash fill!
Wear Your Fave Comfies
The matching lounge set you just got for Christmas is about to come in clutch! We totally get it, sometimes you’re coming from work or the gym, which is of course fine- but wanna feel a new level of luxury? Wear your fave comfies to your next lash appointment. One step further is to be freshly showered… then you’ll be LIVING. Sweet dreams!
Use The Restroom
One thing that seems underrated but will absolutely save you some mental space is using the restroom prior to your appointment. When you’re feeling rushed you may be inclined to just hop right on the table and get going- but take a deep breath and if you need to, go use the restroom! We would rather get started two minutes later than scheduled, than have to stop 20 minutes from the end of your appointment so you can use the restroom. It’s there for a reason! Especially if you are about to have a full set done, follow your mama’s age old advice- even if you don’t think you need to, just try.
Wash Your Lashes
In a perfect world, you would be freshly showered and ready for a nap during your appointment. We get that this hardly ever works out, so if you’re coming from work or other activities to your appointment, it’s best to avoid wearing any eye makeup that day and be ready to scrub your lashes when you get to your appointment! Most artists will provide an area and the products for you to wash your lashes, and if they’re above and beyond, they may even begin your service with a lash bath. Make sure they are squeaky clean to get the best retention possible, and you will absolutely get your money’s worth during your appointments!
Silence is Golden
Like we mentioned earlier, your lash artist is there to provide you with a service that will be beneficial and relaxing to you. While we somehow become therapists to our regulars, it’s true that our best work as creatives is done when the client is asleep. My first few years in the industry were very chatty- sometimes borderline boisterous. After 9 years, my clientele has grown with me and now we have a great flow to our appointments. We’ll spend the first few minutes chatting and catching up on the last 2-4 weeks of our lives, usually while I’m removing grown out extensions and prepping their natural lashes, and then we will both find comfort in being quiet with either other. I may tuck them into a blanket, or just make sure they are comfy before I dive into my flow. While I enter my meditative focused state and get their lashes done, they get to relax and oftentimes get a little cat nap. It’s a win win situation because I get lots of work done and they are happier with their lashes, and they mitigate risk for irritation and sensitivity from movement of their eyes due to excessive talking. This is totally my opinion but it’s what works for me and it may work for you too!
Avoid Makeup
Wearing makeup even around the eye area, can cause products to not adhere well during the appointment, namely the under eye pads. Your artist might use gel pads, which aren’t terribly sticky, and they pretty much just slide around on top of makeup. Of course you will want to avoid any eyeliner and mascara, which is a big no no anyhow when you’re wearing lashes and your artist has educated you properly. A fresh clean palette always gets the best results, and you will end up being happier with your finished result.
All in all, lashes are a luxury service and an investment. You will enjoy them so much more if you prepare for the appointments correctly, and they will last you longer as a result. Spend your money wisely by going to a lash artist who can help you prepare for your appointments and help you when you need to get ready to be still for 1-4 hours.
